What I did was ask myself, "What am I willing to do NOW which will help me continue to do it for the rest of my life?" My answer then was to walk for 15 minutes each night and I made small adjustments to my horrendous eating habits. Today, I can run up to 10 miles at a 10 minute per mile pace. The functioning of the human body, and the mind, has fascinated me since about 1960. I have been soaking up every piece of information I could on topics related to that rather vast area since then.

Along the way, I have become aware that many people, experts and amateurs alike, tend to fall into the same trap when it comes to health-related topics, such as dieting, weight loss, fitness, and so on.

So many seem to concentrate on one small portion of the spectrum of health.

This is bad, at least in my mind, because, while each of these discrete topics and discussions deal with something which impacts the overall health of the individual, they often overlook that impact.

I can understand this, as even I find that it is difficult to address all the various components of life, and their impact on future health and happiness, in small articles...or even large books. In fact, life, a happy and healthy one, is actually such a broad topic that you could build an entire college course around it. Even then, it would be necessary for someone who 'completed' the course to continue to learn because of the immense amount of knowledge already available, and the new discoveries constantly coming to the forefront.

In a small way, I try to combat the narrowness of each small component of life which I may discuss by trying to look at it and discuss it from the viewpoint of how it can contribute to a longer, healthier life.

This is one reason why, when I write articles about how to lose weight, I typically avoid the subject of dieting for weight loss. In most cases, dieting is usually a short-term solution to a weight loss need and is usually only effective in helping the individual lose a few pounds...most of which often return in the very near future. I have also pointed out in other articles that 'going on a diet' in order to lose weight can actually be counterproductive, interfering with health and sometimes even contributing to weight gain.

Another reason I generally avoid touting dieting for weight loss is that I tend to believe in doing things that have a positive and permanent impact on health.

Your body needs a wide range of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fats (Yes, I said 'fats'!), fiber, and phytonutrients to remain healthy...for a long time! These nutrients come from the food you eat, and a 'diet', by its very nature, deprives your body of the very substances it needs to remain healthy, active, and in a permanent weight management mode.

When you diet for weight loss, you either stop eating in general, or you drastically restrict your intake of food. Either way, you are tampering with the natural balance of nutrients your body needs.

Ever hear of the 'Grapefruit Diet', the 'Cabbage Soup Diet', or the 'Atkins Diet'?

It is bad enough that people blindly follow diets such as these, which are often based, usually fairly loosely, on real nutritional science, but it is even worse that they also follow them ignorantly.

No insult intended, 'ignorant' means 'without knowledge', not necessarily 'stupid'.

After all, they went to an 'expert' for guidance. He, or she, said, 'Here! Eat this for weight loss', and they followed the guidance they were given.

The truth is that most of these diets are at best nutritionally deficient in one way or another, and, if followed faithfully long enough to actually result in weight loss, will also result in a negative impact on health due to poorly balanced nutrition. Fortunately, most people will fall off the diet wagon long before that. Unfortunately, if they stay with it long enough before falling off, they may alter their body's metabolism enough that they gain even more weight when they do stop.

Even more bothersome, however, is that most people never really learn how the entire diet works, or is supposed to work.

In the original grapefruit diet, for example, grapefruit is supposed to be eaten with other foods, at least allowing for almost a balanced diet. Many people who hear about the grapefruit diet from neighbors or co-workers believe that they are supposed to 'only' grapefruit.

You can take most of the most famous diets and find the same thing.

The Atkins diet, for example, actually has several levels and stages the dieter is supposed to go through and actually allows, at least over time, for a fairly broad range of foods. I have personally known people who were absolutely certain that being on the Atkins diet meant that all you ever ate was meat!

Restricting your nutritional options in order to lose weight has built in health risks.

Restricting your nutritional options ignorantly and blindly in the pursuit of weight loss, which is usually 'healthier', but not if overall health suffers due to malnutrition, can create health risks which can lead to a loss of whatever mental and physical health you may already enjoy.

Weight loss science has shown over and over again that permanent healthy weight loss depends on a combination of regular physical activity, i.e. exercise, and proper nutrition. Proper nutrition is necessary for a long and healthy life.

While 'proper nutrition' may mean changing some food choices and exercising portion control, it does not mean cutting deeply into, and upsetting the balance of, the nutritional assets (food), which provided vitamins, minerals, and so many other nutrients which can actually help with weight loss.

• Start gradually so as to avoid stiff and sore muscles the next day.

• If you are not accustomed to any kind of exercise, start with five minutes at a time. Build up to 150 minutes each week. (For example, that could be 30 minutes five days of the week.)

• Begin with gentle stretching exercises. Bend your body and your legs until you feel a mild stretch in your muscles. Hold the stretch for ten seconds and repeat twice.

• Drink a glass of water before you start walking. Sip from a water bottle frequently throughout your walk. Drink another glass of water when you get home.

• Walk with your shoulders back and your chin up. Swing your arms as you walk.

In addition to a walking program, incorporate movements of all types into your daily lifestyle. Use the stairs when you can, bend and stretch your joints and muscles throughout the day, play with the kids and the dog, garden, mow, bike...whatever movement you perform, no matter how small, uses calories and loss of calories means loss of weight.

Fun and Motivating Exercises With a Wii


If you are not the sporty type (I am not), you probably need a lot more motivation to start exercising than other people. Make sure to make fitness-training a funny part of the day. A Wii and a few tricks can help you with that.
A little over a year ago, I started in a fitness club, and I went there three times a week.

But then I started on a new job, which took up all my energy in the bad way. I was too sleepy to get up early in the morning to go to the club, so I postponed it til later.

Of course, later never came. Not even when I quit that job.

But lately, I have bought a Wii with Wii Fit and the Wii Board, and also the EA Sports Active and a mat. It all waited for me in the nice, clean exercise room in our house.

Today, I wrote to my daughter over the messenger: I have to start exercising with the Wii. She answered: Why don't you just start? Well, I am considering doing that, I said. She replied: Good luck with your considerations, then.

So this got me out of my chair and into our fitness room. First step: Motivation.

I thought about the Kaizen Methode, and my plan was just to set it all up, connect the different parts and perhaps also find out how much I weighed.

So I did, but almost by accident, I got started. I just wanted to see the exercises in the EA Sports Active, I just wanted to try one of them, and then the next, and then the next.

I had great fun, and I started on the 30 Days Challenge without even having planned to do so.
Tomorrow I will train again, and then Tuesday is my day off, according to the program.

So my advice to you, if you want to start training is: Have fun! Exercising should never be something you just want to get over with. Make it funny. A Wii can help with that. And start with small steps. I enjoyed every moment of my first day of training today. Make sure you do the same.

I'm sure you mean well, but I don't need the revolutionary answer to instant weight loss. You see, I already know the answer, and have known it for years. In fact, it really hasn't been much of a secret since 4th grade biology. Eat less than you are, exercise more than you are, and you will lose weight. Shocking I know. Knowing what to do isn't the secret. It's doing it.

You see, I would rather drink lumpy shakes made out of goat's urine, strap thirty pounds of spandex to my body, and spend thousands on hairdos, clothes, and accessories guaranteed to make me look a size smaller. I would rather have my colon flushed and take diet pills that cause hair loss, fainting spells, and the unavoidable explosive diarrhea. But don't make me eat vegetables - that's just gross. I want those programs where you actually pay more to eat less. I would rather spend hours reading manuals from experts claiming it's not the quantity but the combinations of foods- just don't mix the brown Snickers with the tan French fries and you're fine.

I want to sit around perplexed saying, "But I don't eat that much" and convince myself that I must have some rare thyroid condition and that everybody's order contains the word Supersize. I want to buy exercise tapes that I'm too lazy to open and fancy treadmills to hold my plants, rather than park at the back of the parking lot and take the stairs. I am not interested in the kind of exercise where I am involved. I don't even want to get up to change the TV. I once watched a twenty-four hour Valerie Bertinelli marathon because I couldn't find the remote. I would rather sit around with a group of other overweight people and have them tell me size doesn't matter and look at skinny people in disgust and hope they're miserable.

So I do know the secret to weight loss, Mr. TiredOfYourWeight. Perhaps if you could come up with a revolutionary way to do the things we don't want to do. Now that I would read. So thanks but no thanks. I would, however, be interested in a way to earn a million in a week without ever having to get dressed or leave my house. Do you have a cousin who does that?

Appendix 6 is The Best Life Approach to Exercise by Greene. Simple plan with suggested exercises. Short descriptions of the exercises, but no pictures.

Overall, this is a good book for many people who are having difficulties losing weight, or keeping it off, due to emotional hangups or the lack of motivation. I hit my goal in June of 2006 and Lifetime in August. I was ecstatic. I was a different person. To start off, i can't ever remember where weight wasn't an issue for me. I've always been bigger, overweight, doctors and parents telling me that i should look towards losing weight. For whatever reason, i didn't think it was that serious.

Even as a bigger kid, i was able to be active in sports, fit myself (and stomach) into desks and chairs, practically living life as a "normal" person. My parents often reminded me that i am still gaining weight and look bigger. Just as every other overweight person who is in denial, i never stepped on a scale unless it was required through something like a physical at the doctor's office.

The day came that i realized that as much as i tried to fool myself, i could no longer consider my weight as normal. I stepped onto the balance board for Wii Fit, a game designed for people to lose weight, only to come to the conclusion that i was not allowed to play the game because i surpassed the 330lb limit that is designed by the software. Not being able to play a video game, now that is definitely NOT normal.

This event triggered my journey towards weight loss. In April of 2011, i took the first steps in losing weight by finally addressing the major cause towards my weight, my diet. I began to change my diet and starting to seriously start looking at calories, nutrition, and activity. I started pushing myself towards taking things one step at a time with the simple goal of wanting to become "normal".

Over the years I've had a lot of people say to me, "I will be happy if I can just lose this weight!" Ironically, I believe that in order to lose the weight, first we need to be happy. It's funny how we strive for something and often when we get it we are disappointed, because it's not as great as what we thought it was going to be. However over the long term we then have to deal with the guilt, the disappointment, the discomfort and the worry of gaining weight. If food is not what our body needs, we will continue to be unhappy. I believe we need to acknowledge the issues that are causing us to eat in the first place. We won't always be able to fix it or change it, but by simply acknowledging what is happening we can then make a positive choice on how to comfort ourselves, instead of a negative one.

Personally I believe the reason a lot of us struggle with our health is because we don't love ourselves enough to want to make the changes necessary. How often do we go out of our way to help or take care of others but we won't do it for ourselves? The first step is to "decide" to treat ourselves kindly and make positive decisions based on what we really need. We automatically reach for food when we may actually need a hug, a sleep, some exercise, a kind word from a friend or to simply scream.

Learning to eat "naturally" enables you to tune into your body so you can give it what it needs when it needs it, instead of eating out of habit or automatically turning to food for comfort. Once you learn to love and trust yourself, you will be in harmony with your body and finally be at peace with food.

Its always easy to order a soda when you go out to eat at your favorite restaurant. But from now on I want you to order water. If you want to spice it up a bit you can add a little lemon to it. This will help you keep your calories down and still lose weight while eating out.
