Achieve Great Health With Proper Nutrition

By Meredith Henner

Whether you've struggled in the past or not, you can experience an optimum level of health and well being by becoming very knowledgeable in nutrition. Once you have a firm grasp on what foods you should be eating and what foods you should be avoiding, you can move closer to the weight and level of fitness you've always dreamed of.

Closely examine food labels for items that are listed as being fat free or make the claim to have no trans-fat. Often foods that are labels as fat-free or state that they have no trans-fat in them have a high sugar level to help improve their flavor. Nutrition labels will help you spot the unwanted added ingredients for these items.

Some foods like beans, bananas, sweet potatoes and tomatoes can help to improve your potassium intake. Potassium will lower your blood pressure and help you avoid heart disease and other ailments, including diabetes. Other often overlooked sources of potassium are dairy products and yogurt.

A good way to avoid unhealthy foods like candy, cakes and cookie is to not stock your kitchen with them in the first place. If you do not have bad foods available, you can not eat them.

Many people find it hard to give up soda and other sugary drinks, and this is because sugar is a drug in your system. Instead of cutting them out completely all at once, try cutting your intake in half and over a period of a couple of weeks cut out even more until you no longer carve them.

To be sure you're eating right and getting all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your body needs, make sure to eat a lot of colorful fruits and veggies. This means eat a rainbow every day. Stock up on organic produce and eat mostly this, with some good sources of protein like fish and nuts.

While on your own nutritional journey, bring your kids along for the rise and teach them about proper nutrition. One thing to make sure to avoid is rewarding kids with sugary foods like ice cream and cake. This is setting them up to have bad food habits as adults. Reward them with something different and instill good nutrition early on.

When you eat healthy, it will be a learning process. The tips you have read about are only a minute sampling of the wealth of nutritional guidance within your reach. Do more homework on healthy eating, and increase the health quotient of both your body and your mind.
