Exercise While You Work

By Dave Lee

Working in an office consists of hours spent sitting on a chair all day long. The physical activity that these employees exert is almost a zero, except for the part where they get up, refill their coffee cup or walk to the break room and eat their lunch. Lack of movement can lead to health issue and the development of an unhealthy lifestyle.

There may be other careers that require a good amount of physical activity, but quitting a job for this reason is not a good idea, instead, you should learn to find a way to develop and improve your fitness right inside your workplace.

Replace Your Chair for a Ball

First step in making your workplace more exercise friendly is by getting rid of your desk chair and replace it with an exercise ball. The exercise ball has recently been approved to be an acceptable piece of office furniture that can replace your regular rolling chair into a fun, bouncy ball.

This ball however, is not an ordinary ball because of its many benefits for your posture as well as your blood circulation. Sitting on an exercise ball requires you to move in order to keep your balance which in return causes you to work on your core (abdominal) muscles; strengthening them and in the long run could possibly give you the abs you've always dreamed about.

Move More, Burn More

Walking is a wonderful exercise to do every single day; it gets your heart pumping and is also a great stress reliever. Taking time to do more walking to your office building and around the office can be an exercise routine that you should practice with the aim of burning calories right in the four corners of your workplace. Working out can boost your energy to tackle all the pressure that you may encounter in the office.

Move Around & Stretch

Sitting all day can put a lot of strain on your muscles and inhibit proper blood circulation. Every now and then you should get up and stretch your legs, arms and back muscles to improve circulation and coordination. Take a walk to the photocopy room and while waiting try doing a few arm and leg stretches and hold that extended position for a few counts and repeat. Doing a few stretching exercises every now and then can make you feel relaxed and relieved.

Squeeze and Contract

Whether you are sitting on your chair or balancing an exercise ball, it is still possible to give your body a workout by contracting your abdominal and butt muscles. This method is performed by sucking in or tightening your muscles and then holding it for a few seconds and then releasing as you exhale. Repeat this procedure for as long as you can and you will start to feel that burning sensation.

Lifestyle changes entail a bit of creativity and effort on your part to start incorporating some exercise and a healthy diet into your work habits. Whether it's taking the stairs instead of the elevator or improvising with office equipments you might find around the workplace, these changes will make a difference in staying fit versus adding pounds.
